Personal Philosophy: What is Your Truth & Stance for Living?
A long time ago, in a provincial town far, far away… There was a wealthy, cynical landowner named Fyodor Pavlovitch Kara [...]
Just like you, I’m still in the process of understanding my authentic self. In this guide, we will delve into the significance of self-discovery, drawing insights from some of my own real-life examples and practical lessons.
(The sharing below may not be complete yet, and may not sound like one given by a professional. That said, I hope you will accompany me to the very end – and give me your input if possible. Let’s get started!)
Highlights
Self discovery (also referred to by other similar names such as self exploration, self realization, self actualization, introspection, etc.) is like the ultimate adventure of getting to know yourself – the real you, not the one shaped by society or external influences. It’s about peeling away those layers, like unwrapping the coolest gift ever, to reveal your authentic core.
Imagine this: You’re on a quest to understand your values, motivations, desires, and full-on potential. It’s not about finding some super-fixed, unchanging essence; it’s more like dancing with the dynamic, ever-evolving nature of who you are.
Examples of self discovery observable in real life:

Finding oneself
Believe it or not, the quest for self-discovery isn’t just a modern trend fueled by self-help books and inspiring Instagram posts. In fact, it’s an ancient adventure that humans have been on for thousands of years – a timeless “treasure map” passed down through generations.
Long before we had personality tests or life coaches, ancient civilizations were already deep into the exploration of the self. Back then, the goal was often about finding one’s place in the cosmos or achieving a higher state of being.

Fast forward a few thousand years, and the topic got a modern makeover. The rise of psychology in the 20th century, with figures like Abraham Maslow talking about “self-actualization” (reaching one’s full potential), brought this inner journey into a new light.
Today, the “journey of self-discovery” is a huge theme in our culture – from blockbuster movies to the entire personal development industry. The modern focus is typically more personal: finding a career that brings joy, cultivating healthier relationships, and crafting a unique identity that feels true to you in a world full of external pressures.
So, while the question “Who am I?” is as old as humanity itself, our modern journey is aimed at leveraging that knowledge to build a life filled with purpose, happiness, and authentic fulfillment.
The universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are.

Self discovery, self improvement, and self awareness are related but distinct concepts that involve different aspects of personal growth. The first one is like a compass pointing you toward understanding your beliefs, purpose, and potential. This isn’t about ticking off goals – but about aligning your actions with your true self. Think of it as a deep dive into the essence of you, uncovering layers that define your unique fingerprint.
Now, let’s talk self improvement. It’s like your personal training montage, enhancing skills, overcoming challenges, and boosting happiness levels. Driven by external factors like societal expectations or career aspirations, it’s the practical side of growth. Achieving goals becomes a game, and self improvement is your power-up.
Next, we have self awareness – which is about understanding the intricacies that make you, well, you. Your personality, actions, values, beliefs, emotions, and thoughts – it’s a deep dive into your psychological mirror. As a result, you gain a better recognition of your strengths/ weaknesses, motivations, emotions, and impact on others.

Below is a more detailed breakdown of the three concepts:
| Self discovery | Self improvement | Self awareness | |
| Focus | Understanding your true self, including your values, passions, motivations, and desires | Actively developing and enhancing specific skills, abilities, or aspects of yourself | Observing and understanding your own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors without judgment |
| Process | Exploration and introspection, often through trying new things, reflecting on experiences, and challenging assumptions | Goal-oriented, setting achievable targets and taking specific actions to reach them | Mindfulness, meditation, and observation, developing a metacognitive ability to step back and see yourself clearly |
| Goal | Uncover your essence and authenticity, leading to self-acceptance and making choices aligned with your true self | Increase competence, productivity, and success in specific areas, like career, relationships, or physical fitness | Make better decisions, build stronger relationships, and manage emotions effectively |
| Example | Someone embarking on a solo travel journey to explore their interests and find what sparks their soul | Someone taking a public speaking course to improve their communication skills for career advancement | Someone practicing mindfulness to understand how their thoughts and emotions influence their reactions to situations |
As you may see from the analysis above, the three concepts are not mutually exclusive, and you may pursue them simultaneously or in different stages of your life. Here’s how they connect:
Self discovery helps you know who you are, self-improvement helps you become the best version of yourself, and self-awareness helps you navigate the journey effectively.

Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.
Aristotle
Self discovery is a journey of self-love, acceptance, and empowerment. While the experience is often challenging and requires considerable efforts, the rewards are truly transformative and far-reaching – including but not limited to:
Imagine this: You, armed with the knowledge of your values, motivations, and passions. This isn’t just about ticking boxes – but rather, about aligning your choices with your true self. It’s a power move that gives rise to opportunities and relationships resonating with your core. The result? A life filled with purpose and fulfillment.
Being aware of our strengths and weaknesses equips us to make informed choices with confidence. At the same time, we will become less likely to be swayed by external pressures or expectations.
Understanding our communication style, emotional needs, and triggers transforms us into a more effective communicator and empathetic partner. As such, it will enable us to strengthen our relationships with those around us.
Finding yourself is not just limited to uncovering your strengths; you’re also learning to love yourself in the process. This leads to a healthy dose of self-appreciation and acceptance. The result? A boost in self-confidence and a mind that’s resilient in the face of challenges.
Think of self discovery as the key to the growth kingdom. Specifically, it encourages you to embrace a growth mindset – stepping out of your comfort zone, facing challenges, and embracing the new. It’s this mentality that breeds resilience, adaptability, and a never-ending journey of self-improvement.
Acknowledging your emotional needs – and developing healthy coping mechanisms – is the secret sauce for maintaining mental and emotional well-being. And guess what? A happy mind means a happy body and an overall quality of life that sparkles.
Connecting with your core values and passions unlocks a deeper layer of life’s grand tapestry. You become motivated to contribute to something beyond yourself, leaving a positive impact on the world.
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21

Sometimes we do the wrong things, for the right reasons.
Mr. Ping
Just like you, I’m still in the process of finding my true self. In other words, there are still a lot of things within me that have not surfaced and come to my attention yet. That said, to give you an idea of the importance of self discovery, I would like to go over a few examples from my previous stages of life:
Back in the day, I had – if any – vague ideas of my own self, including what kind of professional path I should embrace. I chose my major as International Business – mostly (not want to brag) because the university I enrolled for was a prestigious one in my country. While my performance during university was not bad, many times I felt really confused and not quite sure what should be my future direction.
After graduation, I got a part-time job as a translator for 2 months. And somehow, the company I worked for decided to offer me the position of Content Officer for a new business they were testing. That was how I started my career path as a content writer.
A few months later, my manager (who was in charge of the business’ Digital Marketing activities) introduced me to SEO – and asked me to do my best to research and incorporate SEO practices into my work. For some reason, I felt as if a light was lit up inside me. I didn’t know why – but I knew for sure this should be something to seriously consider later in life.
Over time, as I dug deeper into the world of SEO, I got to know more things about Digital Marketing in general. I decided to upscale my skills as a full-stack marketer. However, things didn’t turn out as I expected – I did not feel quite fulfilled in my job. After a while, I decided to go back and focus solely on SEO.
But that also wasn’t quite right – I felt.
As I delved deeper into the intricacies of my work, it gradually dawned on me – my satisfaction wasn’t derived from marketing strategies, but rather from the endless pursuit of knowledge. Learning about how search engines work made me feel fulfilled – because (I thought so) it enabled me to expand my horizons without having to resort to traditional methods (e.g.: going to libraries).
Unveiling my core values led to a transformative shift; I found my true calling not in marketing, but in the realm of teaching, facilitating, and – overall – developing people.
This journey, marked by twists and turns, taught me that self-discovery isn’t a destination; it is a continuous exploration. It’s about peeling back layers, uncovering passions, and aligning professional pursuits with the heartbeat of who I truly am. Each revelation, no matter how small, contributes to the mosaic of my evolving self. And so, the odyssey continues.
I used to be a video game lover (and honestly – to a certain extent, I am still one now). Once upon a time, I was a fervent player, diving into various genres. Some games like Dota made me feel quite hyped in the beginning – but soon, the excitement faded away. I felt that the content was too repetitive – and sooner or later, it became more about grinding than about enjoying yourself.
Over time, as I observed my patterns, I started to realize that my favorite type of game is adventure (e.g: Pokemon, the old Harry Potter games, etc.) – not the traditional action games that most teenage boys immerse themselves in. Maybe it was the thrill of the unknown, the excitement akin to embarking on a grand quest that really pumped me up. Maybe (despite my reluctance to admit it) I have always been craving adventures and discoveries. Like Indiana Jones venturing through caves, forests, and mountains – in search of some kind of mystery.
One main shortcoming of these adventure games, though, is that – the story has to end at some time. Once the adventure was over, I felt somehow empty and sad inside. Even though there might be other things to do in-game (e.g. engaging in competitive tournaments in Pokemon games), these just could never stir up my inner fire like the real in-game adventure. Soon, I would just switch to a different game (and the cycle of Excitement-Triumph-Emptiness-Change started again).
So, what’s the deal here?
As mentioned, one special thing about these adventure games (that other conventional ones cannot offer) is the experiences they give me – the ability to live out adventures that I may not have the chance to participate in life (or may need to spend a lot of resources). I like the story, the music, and the life messages that are embedded in many of these games (e.g: the concept of duality & living in balance conveyed in the Pokemon Black & White games).
Later, when I don’t play them any longer, I still occasionally listen to their music or read fan-written articles about their stories. Sometimes, it’s for rediscovering my core values and purposes; sometimes, it’s just for soothing my inner child and getting in touch better with myself – past, present & future (e.g. this Diagon Alley theme from the HP2 game is one I often revisit whenever I feel like wanting to reflect on childhood again).
It wasn’t just about the gameplay; it was about understanding the nuances within myself. An introspective journey revealed that my joy lay not just in playing – but in using these virtual adventures as a mirror to explore my inner ambitions and core values.
Lessons learned: Life itself is an adventure. The key is not just playing the game – but immersing oneself in the experience, connecting with the inner self, and navigating the journey of self-discovery. It is more about the exploration within – and letting yourself be with the flow – rather than the conquests without.
Back in the days of school and early work life, physical exercise wasn’t exactly one of my highlights. My P.E. scores can attest to that.
As the years unfolded – and especially in the wake of the pandemic – the importance of exercise began to dawn on me. It was not easy – but in the end, I decided that I needed to do something.
At my latest company, we happened to have a gym right beside the office – and we could all use its services without the need to pay for anything (there was some kind of partnership between my company and the gym). That was a golden opportunity I couldn’t ignore. Every day – between the morning and afternoon work shifts (around 12:00 – 1:30 PM), when most of my colleagues had lunch, I would hit the gym for a dose of exercises, mostly jogging.
Yet, as life would have it, circumstances changed. For a few personal reasons, I decided to quit working full-time for a while (which means I cannot use the gym’s services for free any longer). Predictably, my physical activities took a nosedive.
The importance of exercise was crystal clear, but inertia, coupled with a disdain for working out, held me back. Stagnation made me stick to old routines. Mind you, whenever I got upset or tired out – and needed something to pump me up, I just resorted to bad habits like eating snacks or drinking coffee to get through (which were not only unhealthy, but also cost me a lot of money too).
One evening, I felt completely exhausted. My brain was still working – but my body just did not comply. I decided to go out for a walk for about 2 hours – after which I felt much better. A simple two-hour walk had reinvigorated both my body and mind.
The revelation? I could exercise without the gym, and the inertia preventing change was within my power to overcome. Life, it seemed, was not just about adhering to old routines – but about making my own choices.
Am I perfect? Far from it. But the journey of recognizing my own limitations and working toward positive change is ongoing. Each revelation, each realization is a step forward on the path of self-discovery. It’s a reminder that the journey, however imperfect, is uniquely mine to make.
One day you will wake up & there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. Do it now!

Self discovery in life
This is where the spotlight turns inward, illuminating the conscious self – your personality. Through the lens of personality tests, journaling, or venturing into new experiences, you start unraveling the layers of who you are. It’s about identifying strengths, acknowledging weaknesses, and aligning with values, interests, and aspirations that shape your conscious identity.
Now, it’s time to venture into the shadows, those corners of yourself often left untouched – the personal unconscious. This is where you confront the “disowned” parts, those aspects denied, repressed, or projected onto others. Techniques like meditation, coaching, or self-analysis become your tools to shine a light on the shadows, bringing them into the conscious realm for understanding and acceptance.
As we ascend the stages, we arrive at the realm of the transpersonal self – the spiritual essence that transcends the ego and personality. It’s a deep dive into the soul, purpose, and connection to something greater than oneself. Here, spiritual practices, mindfulness, and transcendental experiences become gateways to connecting with the profound dimensions within.
The final stage is when the journey leads to a harmonious integration of all facets. It’s about achieving balance among the conscious, unconscious, and transpersonal aspects of yourself. That’s when you are able to live authentically and harmoniously with not just yourself – but with the world around you.

The longest journey is the journey inward.

As you may have noticed from my life examples above, what was going on inside me posed a lot of challenges for me on the journey of finding myself. While societal expectations, the need to sustain our living, and stakeholder benefits (e.g.: our family, our community, etc.), may play a role – I believe our own stagnant mindset is still the one that most needs to be dealt with.
When it comes to internal challenges, here are some of the most popular ones:
These challenges may seem like towering mountains, but here’s the secret – you have the power to conquer them. We all have.
With the right mindset, a dash of courage, and a supportive crew cheering you on, you can navigate the twists and turns of self-discovery.
Your story may not have such a happy beginning, but that doesn’t make you who you are. It is the rest of your story – who you choose to be.

The quest for self-discovery is transformative, but let’s be real: it’s not all sunshine and inspirational quotes. Like any great adventure, the path has its share of tricky terrain and potential traps to watch out for:
This happens when you get so caught up in thinking about yourself that you forget to live. You might find yourself endlessly taking personality tests, scrolling through self-help books, and journaling about your purpose without ever taking action.
Remember, self-discovery is meant to enhance your life, not replace it!
A subtle but common trap where spiritual ideas or practices are used to avoid dealing with uncomfortable human emotions. It’s the voice that says, “I shouldn’t feel angry, I should just send them love and light,” when what you really need is to acknowledge your anger and set a boundary.
True self-awareness means embracing all of your feelings, not just the “good” ones.
There’s a fine line between healthy self-reflection and becoming the main character in a movie only you are watching. When your journey makes you disconnected from or disinterested in the people around you, it might be a sign that self-awareness is tipping into self-absorption. The goal is to understand yourself better so you can connect more deeply with the world, not isolate yourself from it.
Spotting these patterns isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a sign of progress! It means your self-awareness is sharp enough to notice when you’re veering off course. Just observe it without judgment and gently guide yourself back to the path!
One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.
Carl Jung
Imagine turning on the lights in a dimly lit room. That’s what awareness does for your inner self. It’s the ability to perceive and understand the intricacies of who you are – your personality, actions, values, beliefs, emotions, and thoughts. With awareness, you gain a compass to navigate through your strengths and weaknesses, motivations, emotions, and even the ripples you create in the lives of others.
Comfort zones are like cozy nests where you feel safe, secure, and totally at ease. While they offer a sense of sanctuary, they can also become a cocoon, limiting your self-discovery.
Stepping out of your comfort zone is like spreading your wings. It’s about trying new things, facing fears, and challenging yourself. In doing so, you uncover more about what makes you tick – your preferences, passions, values, and the untapped potential waiting for you to unfold.
Intentional living is the art of living with purpose and consciousness, akin to being the author of your life story. It involves aligning your actions and choices with your true self, purpose, values, and goals.
Picture intentional living as your guiding star in the vast night sky. It calls for mindfulness, proactivity, and taking responsibility for the journey you’re on. By living deliberately, you create a tapestry of meaning and fulfillment that resonates with the core of who you are.
It is our choices that show what we truly are – far more than our abilities.
J. K. Rowling

What is important in self-discovery is the person who keeps going, who has a smile, who is kind to others, who works hard at everything, and who keeps their mind on their own business and not everybody else’s.

How to find out who I am
The SWOT model, originally intended for business analysis, may prove to be a powerful tool for self-discovery as well. By understanding your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats, you gain insights into your personality, skills, motivations, and potential roadblocks.
Here’s how to utilize the model:
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Opportunities:
Threats:
By completing a SWOT analysis, you may have a clearer understanding of yourself. This self-awareness may be leveraged to set goals, make informed decisions, and navigate life’s challenges more effectively.

There is no secret ingredient… To make something special, you just have to believe it’s special.

Embarking on the expedition of self-discovery is an exhilarating venture, and having guiding principles can be your North Star through the journey. Let’s unravel the principles that (I hope) will illuminate your path:
Curiosity is the lantern that lights the way to self-understanding. As such, remind yourself to always be an explorer of knowledge. Ask questions about your thoughts, feelings, motivations, and values. Venture beyond your comfort zone and delve into perspectives different from your own.
We have already talked about mindfulness being the compass that will guide you through the landscape of your inner self. Pay attention to your inner world – thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. Observe without judgment – until you unveil insights into automatic patterns and subconscious drives.

Acceptance is the key that unlocks the door to a deeper connection with your authentic self. For this reason, try to embrace every facet of yourself, including flaws and imperfections. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding – while at the same time letting go of self-criticism and judgment.
Tune in to what resonates with your soul – what brings you joy and ignites your inner fire. Let your intuition be the guiding melody, leading you toward activities and experiences that nourish your being.
Do not be afraid to question your ingrained beliefs and societal expectations. Consciously choose to broaden your perspectives. Challenge is the wind that fills your sails with the breath of new possibilities.
With newfound insights, strive to make decisions that mirror your true values, desires, and aspirations. Craft a life that reflects authenticity and fulfillment.
There’s no script in self-discovery. Do not hesitate to experiment with different approaches, embrace the beauty of making mistakes, and let your journey unfold organically.
Rather than aiming for grand transformations, I advise that you focus on small, actionable steps first. As they accumulate, these daily strides will gradually form the bridge between who you are and who you want to become.
Self-discovery is a lifelong journey, not a destination. As such, you should aim to relish all learning opportunities, embrace evolving perspectives, and savor the growth that comes with each experience.
Surround yourself with authentic, supportive relationships – those who respect and encourage your growth. If necessary, you should also consider seeking guidance from mentors and communities aligned with your values.
Acknowledge and appreciate every effort and accomplishment, no matter how small. Celebrate your individuality – the quirks that make you unique. Each celebration is a buoy keeping you afloat on the sea of self-discovery.
Trust the process. Self-discovery is not a quick fix; it’s a continuous journey. Be patient, stay flexible, and believe in the unfolding of your unique path.
Resist the pull of the past or the worry about the future. The present is where your power lies. Cherish each moment, for it is the canvas on which your self-discovery masterpiece is painted.
Quit, don’t quit… Noodles, don’t noodles… You are too concerned about what was and what will be. There is a saying: yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.
Master Oogway

Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.
Carl Jung

So, we’ve explored our values, identified our passions, and learned techniques to understand our minds. We ask, “Who am I?” and we might answer, “I am a creative person, an introvert, a kind friend.”
We ask, “What is my purpose?” and we might say, “To be a great parent,” or “To excel in my career.”
These answers are important. They are the functional boats that help us navigate the ocean of life. But if you listen closely, you might hear a different question echoing from the depths: “Is that all there is?“
This, from my own reflection and experience, is where self-discovery transcends personal development and becomes a spiritual and philosophical quest. It’s the shift from mapping the surface of the ocean to diving into its mysterious depths.
The heart of philosophy has always been the question, “Who am I?” At first, we identify with our personality, our body, our thoughts, and our roles – the “ego.” This is the “me” that shows up to work, talks to friends, and has opinions.
But as we go deeper, we start to notice that we are also the awareness behind all of that. You are not your thoughts; you are the one who notices your thoughts.
You are not your emotions; you are the one who feels your emotions.
This deeper “I” is the silent, conscious space in which your entire life unfolds. Connecting with this is not about finding another label for yourself, but about resting in the simple, profound mystery of being aware.
Similarly, the question “What is my purpose?” begins to transform. It shifts from “What can I achieve?” to “How can I serve?” or “What is my unique way of contributing to life?”
This is the spiritual dimension of self-discovery. It’s the recognition that our individual lives are part of a much larger tapestry.
Your “purpose” is less about a specific job title and more about the quality of presence and love you bring to the world. It’s found in the moments of connection – with another person, with nature, with a creative act, or with a cause greater than yourself.
It’s realizing that the meaning of your life isn’t a treasure to be found, but a reality to be lived in each present moment.
This realization doesn’t erase the practical side of self-discovery. Knowing your personality is still vital. But it infuses the journey with a sense of wonder and reverence. You are not just improving a character; you are waking up to the incredible mystery that is YOU.
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.

First, spend some time reflecting on your life, values, and what ignites your interest. Ask questions and explore different perspectives. Practice mindfulness, journaling, or therapy to gain self-awareness and understand your motivations. And one more note – remind yourself to try new things, challenge assumptions, and embrace experiences that bring you joy.
There is no hard-and-fast answer to this question; however, here are some critical points for you to consider:
Self-discovery is a continuous process, not a destination. It takes time, effort, and commitment to learn and grow. The progress is not always linear; hence, you should embrace the ups and downs as part of the adventure. New experiences and challenges will continue to reveal new layers of yourself, making it a forever-evolving adventure.
You can experiment with different techniques and find what sparks your curiosity and keeps you motivated. Break down your journey into smaller steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small.
Additionally, do not hesitate to share your journey with supportive friends, communities, or mentors. Their encouragement and shared experiences should provide an endless source of inspiration.
The greatest explorer on this earth never takes voyages as long as those of the man who descends to the depth of his heart.

Now that we have gone through the core of self discovery (I hope my sharing is not too shabby), remember that this journey is a lifelong endeavor. From curiosity to clarity, the expedition never truly ends; it merely transforms into a perpetual celebration of your authentic existence. May your path be filled with self-compassion, intentional living, and the joy of discovering the incredible depth within yourself.
All the best!
